Brian Returns!

Following his very successful coaching trip in February, top UK catamaran sailing coach and trainer Brian Phipps of the Windsport International Coaching Team will be back in September to run group and personal training sessions at the Club.  Feedback from participants of the February training courses was overwhelmingly positive, and several have already signed up for more coaching.

The personal training sessions will be on Thursday and Friday September 25 & 26, and will give you the opportunity to improve specific areas of your sailing performance.  Saturday September 27 will be a novice/intermediate group training day, focusing on the development of good boat handling skills.  Sunday September 28 will be a group race training day, focusing on starts, mark roundings, race tactics and boat tuning.  All sessions are open to all types of Hobies.  Brian supports the training with video debriefs and off water Q&A sessions.

Brian is no stranger to HK, and everyone who has attended his courses has fun and greatly improves their Hobie sailing. I highly recommend his training, and I encourage anyone wishing to sail better and faster to sign up for a course as soon as you can.

Below, Brian offers some insights into his Hobie coaching programme...

What can a Hobie Catamaran Sailing coach do for me??
As a Cat Coach, I enjoy working across all levels of catamaran sailing from first time out sailors to individual teams attending world championships. Every team and every sailor have skills they find easy and some challenging to perform, techniques and tactics they understand and some they need to work on. Wherever you are with your catamaran sailing, a small amount of coaching will help you to enjoy it even more.

Reasons for Training
Typical comments from the sailors I have worked with?

"I enjoy my Hobie sailing but lose a bit of confidence when the wind gets going?"
"In light winds I just lose the plot!"
"I blast around ok but would like to understand how to get the best out of the boat.?
"I would like to join in some races for fun but do not want to get in the way."
"I race at the club but want to start challenging the sailors at the front.?
"I have been sailing so long I think I have stopped improving!"
"This is a new boat to me and I need to get up to speed quickly."
"At the last international regatta I attended I realized there are faster ways to sail the boat."
"It is not me it is the crew that needs help!"
"We just need more confidence."

The Hobie Club coaching planned for September is a real opportunity for you to move your personal sailing skills to another level, and will help you better understand your boat on and off the water. It is a one-off opportunity that will add real value to your sailing.

Coaching does not come free but the results last forever!

Let's move your Hobie sailing skills on and get out on the water even more in 2008.

Po Toi Beach Hazard
HKHC member Jonathan Aitchison visited Po Toi on Sunday and noticed a new Hobie hazard...

"I thought members might find it useful to know something before running their hobies up on the beach in the near future -- the tide was very low when we visited yesterday and we noticed that the recent typhoon has shifted on of the 'anchors' the locals use for their buoys (in this case a dirty old yellow float) -- the 'anchor' is a rusty used engine block (very solid) -- the key point is that this hazard is now located very close to shore -- pretty much bang in the middle of the beach -- with a little more tide it would be unseen but it will definitely be felt by rudders or dagger boards."

Thanks for the tip Jonathan!
